SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW) is the technological basis for a comprehensive Enterprise Data Warehouse, as well as a business intelligence and planning environment. With SAP BW, you can bring together historical and current data from various systems, model, consolidate and prepare it to make it available to your employees for analysis, reporting and planning.
SAP BW on anyDB, SAP BW powered by SAP HANA, SAP BW/4HANA - the SAP Business Warehouse portfolio is extremely diverse. The orientation for the future is much clearer: SAP focuses exclusively on SAP BW/4HANA for innovations and further developments. One of the main reasons for the consistent orientation towards SAP BW/4HANA is the significantly higher performance achieved by the HANA in-memory technology compared to conventional databases. Leaner data models, shorter loading times, and modern user interfaces ensure up to 70% faster processes.
Data Tiering Optimization simplifies data aging or data tiering in SAP BW/4HANA. The concept classifies data as hot, warm or cold and assigns it to different tiers/storage media. Another advantage is that SAP BW/4HANA enables the tightest integration with SAP Data Warehouse Cloud.
For companies using an SAP BW release older than 7.5, the end of maintenance in 2027 means that they will have to deal with the migration to SAP BW/4HANA early on. Depending on the initial situation, there are various options for the migration, which vary in their procedure.
It is important to carry out a comprehensive overall assessment in advance of the migration to SAP BW/4HANA. The changeover is not only accompanied by adjustments to data structures and data modeling. It is at least as important to keep an eye on the effects on the front-end side. SAP Business Explorer (BEx) and traditional BEx tools such as Web Application Designer (Web templates) and Analyzer (workbooks) will still be supported by SAP BW/4HANA in a transition phase until 2023. After that, data must be prepared using SAP Business Objects, Microsoft Analysis for Office or SAP Analytics Cloud.
There is not the one and only optimal method to switch to SAP BW/4HANA. You have to make the decision based on the initial situation and future requirements. SAP recommends various migration methods depending on the start release of your SAP BW.
A greenfield approach or a new implementation means that a completely new SAP BW/4HANA system is implemented. All reporting applications and objects are recreated on the basis of SAP BW/4HANA. The data transfer from the old BW system must take place in a separate step.
There are three different migration methods for a system conversion approach. With an in-place conversion, the current BW system is converted to SAP BW/4HANA in the system itself, so to speak. The in-place conversion requires a SAP HANA database, as well as a SAP BW 7.5 with a minimum SP Level 5, and the SAP BW/4HANA Starter Add-on must be installed. This is the only way to convert Transfer Cockpit data flows into BW/4HANA compliant objects.
If the remote conversion is used, the first step is to set up a new SAP BW/4HANA system with a new SID. In the next step, data models in the legacy system can be selected and converted to the new SAP BW/4HANA. The data from the objects to be converted is also transferred. In contrast, the shell conversion does not transfer this data to the new SAP BW/4HANA system, but only transfers the converted metadata of the new objects. Many companies use the shell conversion to optimize their data models and then load the data in a separate step.
In scenarios where several SAP BW systems are to be merged into one target SAP BW/4HANA system, the migration method of system consolidation is used.
We recommend starting a migration project with a proof of concept or an analysis preliminary project. The aim is to minimize any problems that may arise during the migration phase.
The paths to SAP BW/4HANA are highly individual and difficult to outline due to the different preconditions. Nevertheless, we have decided to offer migration concepts at a fixed price. Simply complete the form and you will receive a non-binding offer. No financial surprises − from the SAP BW expert.
